History is Our Story

Rock-and-roll great Elaine McFarlane (Spanky & Our Gang; The Mamas and the Papas) and rock manager Curley Tait, residents of Ferndale, California, talk about their long friendship with each other, with George Carlin, and the music scene of the '60s.

A short excerpt from an afternoon interview (December 2010) with Ida Godinho Toste, in her home on Dillon Road outside of Ferndale, California.

In October 1940, the editor of a country weekly newspaper, the Ferndale Enterprise, asked recently drafted servicemen to write letters home to the paper, and they would be "published as received." Over the next five years, 439 men and women -- 20% of the region's population -- served in the US Armed Forces. The Enterprise published their letters as promised, and their stories as well. From the compilation of these clippings, Ferndale Museum filmmakers Wendy Lestina and Melissa Lema have made a feature film, Letters Home. This is a hint of their stories.
